Mountains to Whales

Eleven days from the mountain waterfalls and cacao farms of the Dominican highlands to humpback whale season in Samaná Bay

From the Cordillera Central to the Samaná Coast

Cool Mountains, Hidden Valleys, and Cacao Country

This custom itinerary starts in the Cordillera Central, where Jarabacoa sits at an elevation locals call the "Land of Eternal Spring" — cool mountain air, cilantro fields, and rivers running through farmland. A day trip to Constanza climbs even higher into what's known as the "Switzerland of the Caribbean," where vegetable farms supply much of the country and Salto de Aguas Blancas drops 272 feet into a jade pool surrounded by pine forest. On the drive from mountains to coast, a stop in San Francisco de Macorís connects you to the Dominican Republic's identity as one of the world's top organic cacao exporters, with a hands-on bean-to-chocolate experience alongside local producers.

Whale Season, Remote Beaches, and Taíno Caves

The second half of the trip settles into Las Galeras on the Samaná Peninsula. Between January and March, approximately 80 percent of the North Atlantic humpback whale population migrates to Samaná Bay to mate and give birth — a guided boat excursion puts you in the middle of it. On other days, explore seven remote beaches along the coast by boat, snorkel at Playa Frontón beneath dramatic cliffs, and navigate the mangroves and Taíno cave petroglyphs of Los Haitises National Park. A built-in slow day in Las Galeras leaves room for the unstructured encounters that often become the trip's best stories.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Eleven days with a private guide and transportation, from the mountain town of Jarabacoa through cacao country to the beaches and whale waters of the Samaná Peninsula. This itinerary can also be configured as a self-drive trip. Every element can be adjusted to match your interests, pace, and travel dates.

Day 1: Arrival in Jarabacoa

Arrive at Cibao International Airport and transfer privately (approximately one hour) into the mountains of Jarabacoa, known as the "Land of Eternal Spring." Nestled in the Cordillera Central, Jarabacoa offers cool mountain air, fertile farmland, and a peaceful setting to begin your trip. Settle into your lodge and enjoy a welcome dinner featuring fresh, locally sourced Dominican cuisine.

Lodging: Hotel Gran Jimenoa, Jarabacoa
Meals: Dinner

Day 2: Salto de Baiguate

Wind through countryside villages and cilantro fields on your way to Salto de Baiguate, an 82-foot waterfall tucked into lush forest. A moderate 25-minute hike through tropical vegetation leads to the falls, where you can swim in the emerald pool or relax in the mountain setting.

Afternoon at leisure to explore town, visit local cafés, or enjoy the lodge.

Lodging: Hotel Gran Jimenoa, Jarabacoa
Meals: Breakfast

Day 3: Horseback Riding to the Waterfall

Ride through rolling hills, rural villages, and along riverbanks on calm, well-trained horses. Arrive at Salto de Baiguate again for a swim beneath the falls.

Afternoon free for optional activities — local coffee visits, artisan stops, or time relaxing in the mountain air.

Lodging: Hotel Gran Jimenoa, Jarabacoa
Meals: Breakfast

Day 4: Constanza Day Trip

Journey into the highlands of Constanza, often called the "Switzerland of the Caribbean." The valley is known for its cool, alpine-like climate, sweeping views, and the vegetable farms that supply much of the country.

Visit Salto de Aguas Blancas, a 272-foot waterfall and one of the highest cascades in the Caribbean, dropping into a cold jade pool surrounded by pine forest. Enjoy a locally prepared lunch in town and visit a strawberry farm to pick your own.

Return to Jarabacoa in the evening.

Lodging: Hotel Gran Jimenoa, Jarabacoa
Meals: Breakfast, lunch

Day 5: Mountains to Coast — Cacao and Community

Travel from the mountains to the northeastern coast, stopping in San Francisco de Macorís for a hands-on cacao experience. Learn about the journey from bean to chocolate with local producers, connecting agriculture, history, and global trade to the Dominican Republic's role as one of the world's top organic cacao exporters.

Continue to Las Galeras, a beach town on the edge of the Samaná Peninsula. Check into your seaside lodge and enjoy dinner by the ocean.

Lodging: Villa Serena, Samaná
Meals: Breakfast, lunch

Day 6: Humpback Whales of Samaná Bay

Between January and March, approximately 80 percent of the North Atlantic humpback whale population migrates to Samaná Bay to mate and give birth. Board a guided boat excursion for an encounter with these animals in protected waters — breaches, tail slaps, and mother-calf interactions. For those traveling outside of January to March, an alternate activity will be arranged.

Afternoon at leisure.

Lodging: Villa Serena, Samaná
Meals: Breakfast, lunch

Day 7: Seven Beaches of Samaná

Explore remote beaches along the Samaná coastline by boat — Playa Rincón, Playa Frontón, Playa del Amor, and others accessible only by water or rugged roads. Swim, snorkel, and take in dramatic cliffs, turquoise water, and quiet stretches of sand.

Lodging: Villa Serena, Samaná
Meals: Breakfast, lunch

Day 8: Slow Day in Las Galeras

A free day with no schedule. Explore the town, walk the beach, or see where the day takes you.

Lodging: Villa Serena, Samaná
Meals: Breakfast, lunch

Day 9: Los Haitises National Park

Explore the mangroves, limestone cliffs, and caves of Los Haitises National Park by boat. Visit caves adorned with Taíno petroglyphs — reminders of the island's Indigenous heritage. The park is a sanctuary for birds, marine life, and endemic species.

Return to Las Galeras in the afternoon.

Lodging: Villa Serena, Samaná
Meals: Breakfast, lunch

Day 10: Return to Santo Domingo

Transfer from Las Galeras to Santo Domingo. Farewell dinner in the historic Colonial Zone.

Lodging: Hodelpa Nicolás de Ovando, Santo Domingo
