La Fortuna, Monteverde, and Manuel Antonio
A custom itinerary through Costa Rica's three most iconic regions — volcanic foothills, cloud forest canopy, and Pacific coast

From Volcano to Cloud Forest to Coast
Three Regions, One Road Trip
This 11-day self-drive itinerary follows Costa Rica's classic route: three nights in the Arenal Volcano area around La Fortuna, three nights in the cloud forest of Monteverde, and three nights on the Pacific coast at Manuel Antonio. Each region has its own landscape, elevation, and ecology. You drive from coffee plantations and cattle fields at 6,000 feet to cloud forest at 5,000 feet to sea-level beaches — with the scenery changing dramatically between each stop. Offbeat Travel handles the hotels, guides, and activity bookings while you set your own pace on the road.

Guided Adventures Along the Way
The itinerary balances self-guided exploration with expert-led experiences. At Arenal, you hike the national park and the 230-foot La Fortuna Waterfall on your own, then tackle Class III-IV rapids on the Río Sarapiquí with a guide. In Monteverde, a naturalist leads you through the cloud forest reserve — home to more than 400 bird species and 130 species of mammals — followed by a night walk and a canopy tour with 13 cables and a full-kilometer zipline. At Manuel Antonio, you sail along the coast on a catamaran and explore one of Costa Rica's most biodiverse national parks with a certified guide.
Day-by-day itinerary
Eleven days by rental car through Costa Rica's volcanic highlands, cloud forests, and Pacific coast. This itinerary can also be configured with private transfers if you prefer not to drive. Every element can be adjusted to match your interests, pace, and travel dates.
Day 1: Arrival in San José
Arrive at Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO), pick up your rental car, and drive to your hotel in San José for the night.
Lodging: Hotel in San José
Day 2: Drive to La Fortuna
Today you drive through mountains and rich agricultural areas. Coffee plantations, sugar cane, and cattle fields line the road as you climb the continental divide at approximately 6,000 feet. After a stop for a snack or a drink, the landscape changes dramatically — cassava, papayas, and plantains replace the highland crops. The Arenal Volcano comes into view as you approach La Fortuna. The drive takes two to three hours.
Lodging: Los Lagos Spa and Resort, La Fortuna
Meals: Breakfast
Day 3: Arenal Volcano National Park and La Fortuna Waterfall
A self-guided day at your own pace. In the morning, visit Arenal Volcano National Park, known for its lush rainforest and scenic lava trails. In the afternoon, hike through the rainforest to the 230-foot La Fortuna Waterfall, where you can swim at the base.
Lodging: Los Lagos Spa and Resort, La Fortuna
Meals: Breakfast
Day 4: Whitewater Rafting on the Río Sarapiquí
Paddle over 30 rapids on the Río Sarapiquí, many rated Class III-IV. The river runs through forested corridors with big drops and bigger splashes. After the run, sit down for a traditional Costa Rican lunch. The full excursion takes approximately seven hours.
Lodging: Los Lagos Spa and Resort, La Fortuna
Meals: Breakfast, fruits, lunch
Day 5: Drive to Monteverde
After breakfast, head to Monteverde. The drive crosses rolling hills and rural landscapes, with opportunities to spot wildlife along the way.
Lodging: Cloud Forest Lodge, Monteverde
Meals: Breakfast
Day 6: Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve and Night Walk
In the morning, a naturalist guide leads you through the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve — 25,730 acres of biodiversity with more than 130 species of mammals, 400 species of birds, 30 species of hummingbirds, and 3,000 species of plants. The guided tour takes approximately four hours.
In the evening, experience the cloud forest after dark on a guided night walk through Ficus Trails. Expert naturalists point out nocturnal wildlife — frogs, bats, sloths, and spiders — that you'd never see during the day.
Lodging: Cloud Forest Lodge, Monteverde
Meals: Breakfast
Day 7: Natural History Walk and Canopy Tour
The morning begins with a two-hour natural history walk, where your guide shares insights into the cloud forest's biological characteristics and Monteverde's cultural heritage.
In the afternoon, the canopy tour takes you through the treetops: 13 cables (one spanning over a half mile), 15 platforms, and a Tarzan Swing. The full run covers 2.2 miles through the cloud forest canopy. The tour takes approximately an hour and a half.
Lodging: Cloud Forest Lodge, Monteverde
Meals: Breakfast
Day 8: Drive to Manuel Antonio
You drive from the green mountains of Monteverde down to the Pacific coast — 5,000 feet to sea level. The contrast between these areas is significant, and the landscape shifts from cloud forest to cattle ranches, African palm cultivations, and small towns. The drive takes about four hours with at least one stop to stretch and eat.
Lodging: Costa Verde Hotel, Manuel Antonio (3 nights)
Meals: Breakfast
Day 9: Catamaran Cruise and Snorkeling
An afternoon on the water along the Manuel Antonio coastline. Sail on a catamaran, watch for dolphins and sea turtles, and stop at a bay for snorkeling with tropical fish and coral.

Day 10: Manuel Antonio National Park
A guided tour of Manuel Antonio National Park, one of the most biodiverse regions on the planet. Your certified guide helps you spot monkeys, anteaters, iguanas, birds, and — if you're patient — the three-toed sloth. The park has been protected for more than 40 years.
Lodging: Costa Verde Hotel, Manuel Antonio
Meals: Breakfast, snacks, water
Day 11: Departure
Drive back to San José, return your rental car, and take the shuttle to the airport for your departure flight. Pura Vida.
