Arenal Reforestation Project
Service learning in the shadow of Arenal Volcano — three days of reforestation work on a biological corridor, an organic farm tour, and a national park hike

Reforestation and Conservation in La Fortuna
Rebuilding a Biological Corridor
Students spend three days on a reforestation project along a biological corridor near La Fortuna, known for sheltering two-toed and three-toed sloths along with numerous species of birds, mammals, and amphibians. They work alongside local conservation teams, learning reforestation techniques while contributing to a project that connects fragmented habitats across the region. These are projects that would take years for communities to fundraise for on their own, and they contribute to a shared sense of pride and stewardship in the area. The work is physical — a few hours in the morning, lunch, and a few more hours in the afternoon, with time for water breaks and stretching.

Arenal Volcano, Organic Farming, and Costa Rican Culture
The program also includes a hike through Arenal Volcano National Park, where students explore the lush foothills of one of Costa Rica's most recognizable landmarks. At Finca Don Juan, an organic farm near La Fortuna, they learn how fresh produce is cultivated and experience Tico agricultural traditions firsthand. A visit to a local school for a cultural presentation and dance rounds out the cultural exchange. The group is based at The Volvano and Rainforest Service Base in La Fortuna for five nights, with the first and last nights in San José.
