There are over 1 billion motor vehicles currently clogging up the world's highways and byways, an estimated 34.5 million of which are currently kept within the 89,000 square miles of Great Britain -- it's fair to say we can't really cope without our cars.

A quick look at the world's top 10 selling cars shows just a handful of manufacturers dominate sales, but they're from countries as widespread as Japan, USA, Germany and the UK.

Until the late 1990s, the Beetle was the world's top-selling car of all time, but since, the Toyota Corolla has overtaken it as the favourite. In 2013, Japenese manufacturer, Toyota revealed they were to produce the 40 millionth Corolla. Despite its design change over the years, it still remains popular due to its reliability. Second to this, was the Ford F-Series, a popular American car. The Volkswagen Passat remains a sturdy family favourite at 9th, selling 15.5 million cars. The Chevrolet Impala falls just behind at 14 million, quite a way behind the Corolla which to this day, makes up nearly 20% of Toyota's sales, globally.

And while a booming global export market means the UK is littered with cars from across the globe, the top 10 best sellers of 2015 were all familiar faces.

Ford Fiesta cars are increasingly popular in the UK. as drivers generally 'Trust Ford'. In 2015, over 100,000 fiestas were registered, beating the next car, the Vauxhall Corsa, by over 30,000 cars. Five out of the top 10 most registered cars in the UK in 2015 were Fords and Vauxhalls. Volkswagen made an appearance with the ever popular Golf and Polo, MINI, Audi A3 and Nissan Qashqai also featured.
