Grupo Mayan Resorts Goes Eco-friendly Green Grupo Mayan has completed all three steps needed to achieve their EarthCheck documentation: affiliation, benchmarking (operational efficiency indicators
and environmental impact), and certification (gained after two onsite audits). EarthCheck is an international certification for sustainable tourism.
It is granted by EarthCheck, an independent company operating its own benchmark and certification standard; it’s now trusted by more than 1,000
organizations in over 60 countries
Grupo Mayan has been practicing environmental procedures since their inception in 1974, but has recently invested even more
time and resources into their hotels in Acapulco, Los Cabos, Riviera Maya and more. Grupo Mayan properties practice eco-system, energy, and waste conservation, in addition to eco-friendly building and design methods
Grupo Mayan’s four properties follow strict energy and waste conservation procedures, ecosystem, air and noise residuals, and practice all legislation and sustainability practices. The Mayan Resorts have set a benchmark in Mexico as the ideal destination for environmentally aware travelers. “What’s great about Grupo Mayan is that they pair luxury with an eco-friendly mission,” said Richard Vallin, General Manager for the Vallarta Resort. “We have played an instrumental role in the eco-tourism market here in Mexico by ensuring that our hotels are beneficial to the environment and the local community and economy as well.” Eco-System Conservation and Green ActivitiesSeveral Grupo Mayan Resort brands are a part of En Advance, which unites efforts for the preservation of Mexican ecology and the protection of the marine turtle, in order to rescue this species from the threat of extinction. Acapulco and Riviera Maya are locations in which they actively hold efforts to ensure that turtles are born and the species continues to survive. At their Mayan Palace Resort, sea turtles lay their eggs on the beaches, some times more than 80 a night. From October until December freeing baby turtles becomes an activity for guests. This exciting and educational activity sustains the natural habitat and teaches guests about Grupo Mayan’s conservation efforts. Natural Resource ConservationEach Grupo Mayan resort features green amenities and operational procedures. For instance, each hotel room is equipped with water conserving toilets, faucets and showers that reduce water consumption while still offering the luxury component. Mayan Resorts save electricity by training their housekeeping staffs to control in-room air conditioning and lighting consumption. In fact, each month they have a meeting with all of their properties to revise utility consumption and devise an action plan on how to reduce it.Depending on occupancy, they will close certain towers and parts of the hotels to reduce air conditioning and electricity consumption. They also use special laundry agents that allow them to wash their linens at a lower temperature. Grupo Mayan properties also use recycled water to irrigate their golf course and landscape, and avoid irrigation during peak sun hours to avoid massive evaporation. As per their EarthCheck regulations, Grupo Mayan must show that year after year less trash is generated per occupying room. They do this by looking for suppliers that use less cardboard and plastic in their products, and using reusable plastic boxes. Grupo Mayan also does their own composting with organic wastes, which they use for their golf course and garden maintenance. They also separate and recycle aluminum, paper, plastic, metal and glass and sell it to their suppliers. For their future hotels Grupo Mayan is currently looking to implement eco-friendly LED lighting, and will use solar heating systems to heat their water and pool facilities.
