Alaska Celebrates Fifty Years of Statehood

On January 3, 1959, Alaska became the 50th state of the United States, so the arrival of 2009 fifty years later has been a reason to celebrate.
Among its anniversary commemorations thus far have been a new postage stamp, a float in the Rose Parade in Pasadena and the launching of a special website, with current news and events related to statehood celebrations. The Juneau Convention & Visitors Bureau in conjunction with Capital City Celebrations (Juneau’s 50th Year organization body) will commemorate Alaska’s 50th Anniversary of Statehood with numerous celebrations and festivities throughout the year. Tourists will have plenty of opportunities to take part in the biggest party in 50 years. If planning an Alaska trip this spring and summer, be on the lookout for anniversary events, as well as deals at various hotels, restaurants and activities in the area.

A few upcoming events include:

Eaglecrest 50th Anniversary Ski Celebration February 28th - Family Fun at Juneau’s premier ski area with Capital City Celebration cakes.

Battles of Fire and Water Saturday, March 14th - Perseverance Theater. Production depicting early battle at Sitka between Russians and Local Natives. Capital City Celebrations will be providing cake and coffee.

Quilt Show March 28th - A partnership between Capital City Celebrations and the local Juneau quilting organization.

8 Stars of Gold March 1st - April 5th - Perseverance Theater Production highlighting memories of 50 years ago and Alaska’s long road to Statehood.

4th Of July Celebrations July 3rd – Ball games early in day ending with community fireworks over downtown Juneau. July 4th Reenactment of 1959 flag raising event held in Juneau – followed by the Juneau Parade at noon and continuing parade and festivities.
