The answer, until the end of 2003, had been the Petronas Towers, in Kuala Lumpur. But the opening of Taipei 101 has changed the sky-scraper landscape. With its 197 foot spire, Taipei 101 stretches 1667 feet into the air, eclipsing Petronas' 1483 feet. Expect further challenges from Shanghai World Financial Center and the Freedom Tower.
