There are some moments in life that are just perfect. They don't have to be big, spectacular events. In fact, it's often the simpler pleasures that we
carry with us as cherished memories. Eating breakfast on the balcony of our hotel room at Garden of the Gods Club, with my view of Pikes Peak and the
stone monoliths of Garden of the Gods -- a city park of Colorado Springs -- is one of those simple, delightful times.
We enjoyed our perfectly cooked eggs, bacon, sausage and fresh fruit as we watched the sunlight play over the upthrusts of rock that have entranced
visitors for decades. A day that starts off in beauty with good food is already a fortunate day.
One particularly nice touch was the real dairy creamer
tucked into the room refrigerator. I can’t abide the powdered stuff, or anything labeled non-dairy in my coffee. Few places provide this thoughtful
amenity.
Garden of the Gods Club - The Lodge has a delightful luxe retro feel with architecture designed during the 1960s, updated with 21st century amenities. Although it
is not located within the boundaries of this incredible free state park, no lodging is, it offers spectacular views from each of its 87 lodge rooms and
suites. The spacious lobby and dining room open on the same gorgeous vista. In fact, the entire lodge has been laid out to maximize the views.
There's so many activities and attractions in
Colorado Springs, and the nearby towns of Manitou Springs, and Cripple Creek you’ll need to make sure you
work time into your schedule to enjoy the landscaped grounds with a reflecting pool, tennis courts, spa, plus the infinity swimming pool.
Across the road there’s the 27- hole Kissing Camels Golf Course and the large well-equipped fitness center where you can imagine you're striding or biking
into that vista.
There's plenty of dining options in Colorado Springs but fortunately, if you want more of that view, there’s a dining room in the lodge. The Grille in the
Kissing Camels golf club offers its own laid-back charm with excellent food. The coconut shrimp with dipping sauces was outstanding, as was the grilled
salmon. The meatloaf also garnered high praise, and come with perfectly seasoned mashed potatoes.
As for breakfast, treat yourself to room service, the prices are not really any higher than you’d pay if you had to get dressed (and give up that comfy
robe) drive to a restaurant, and have an ordinary view of traffic. Ah....
