Barefoot Cay Beckons at RoatanRoatan is a small island of the coast off Honduras and it is the largest of the Bay Islands. Most of its previous tourist population has
been scuba divers because it is the home of the worlds 2nd largest coral reef. But Roatan is becoming better known now since the cruise ships that have
recently began stopping there. Most divers would come and stay for a week at places more on the basic side than luxury.
However there is a new kid on the block. Barefoot Cay is a small privately own cay 100 feet off
the South shore line of Roatan. The American owners have
built a delightful small elite and intimate resort.
Designed with the luxury traveler in mind, it has all the amenities one would expect. They feature 4 beachfront luxury 1 and 2 bedroom bungalows all uniquely designed, including Balinese showers with partially open roofs. The two bedrooms are set up as two master bedrooms making it perfect for two couples to share. Providing a lovely view point is a 260 foot long dock leading out to the deep water with a 30 foot palapa equipped with snorkeling gear and hammocks for guest to enjoy. With the warm clear blue water surrounding you as you float through the air in your hammocks; it just doesn’t get better than this. Bungalow guest have a fully equipped kitchen (although meal and beverage service is available) and access to massage and physical therapy services. It is truly a picturesque get-away-from-it-all kind of place. We spent one delightful day there by taking an alternative shore excursion while on a cruise. We were greeted and driven from the cruise port to the cay by the resort van, and transferred to a boat to cross the channel.
They also have a small marina that can accommodate up to 165 foot yachts. The slips have proven to be very popular. It is easy to see why the yachter chooses to use this marina over a public docking area. Serenity is found here along with wi-fi satellite internet and drinkable tap water. Scuba diving, kayaking, fishing, beachcombing are other options to do there besides enjoy the unhurried quiet and the turquoise sea. Barefoot Cay resort also has a clear bottom boat for their guest to enjoy. The average temperature is 80 degrees and the water temperature varies from approximately 78 degrees to 84 degrees. The dress is beachcomber casual, but sturdy sandals are crucial. Roatans most famous dive site Mary’s place is located just outside the reef at Barefoot Cay, so it is easily accessible. In the afternoon we were given a narrated harbor tour of the near by town of French Harbor, from Barefoot Cay’s motorized pontoon boat. A one day visit will leave you longing to return for a week of quiet paradise. A paradise cay most island visitors will drive right by without ever realizing what awaits them across that 100 foot channel. Staying on Roatan? Cars and scooters can be rented to see Roatan during your stay, although Barefoot Cay has made special arrangements with some of the attractions on Roatan like the Dolphin Encounter and Gumbalimba Park allowing their clients to be the recipients of special pricing.
If your cruise ship will be making a stop at Roatan ShoreTrips.com can arrange for your day
excursion to Barefoot Cay.
